Chapter 9

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh,

but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1

* * *

"How was your dinner with Samuel?”

"It was nice. I think you've misjudged him. He's a nice man and his boys are lovely."

Pamela looked at her amazed. “You don't like him in that way, do you?"

"And what ‘way’ would that be?"

Pamela giggled. "You know what I mean. Are you thinking he would make a gut husband?"

"I'm not looking for a new husband, but if I were I might consider him. I think he’d be okay."

Pamela’s smile faded. "You'd want someone more than okay if you're going to marry again."

"I'm feeling pressure from people to marry. Even Nathan and James want me to find a husband; I’m certain of it. They’re the ones who invited Samuel over for dinner."

"You didn't tell me it was their idea."

“Jah, I did. I don’t know Samuel well enough to have invited him. I wouldn’t have thought of it by myself.”

“Maybe you told me. Jah, I think you did.”

"I don't have to tell you everything, do I?" Katie smiled at her friend.

"Jah you do have to tell me everything. I'm your best friend; who else would you tell?"

Katie sighed and didn’t reply.

"Have you heard from Mark at all?" Pamela asked.

“Nee, I haven’t. I thought you might have.”

"Well, he called me yesterday. I just happened to be in the barn and heard the phone ring."

"What did he say?"

"He said he has the opportunity to take a job there."

This wasn’t good. "He’s staying there?” Katie asked trying to sound calm.

“Maybe.”

“What kind of job?" Katie put her fingers to her throat. She wanted Mark to come home.

"He didn't say what kind of a job. I guess some kind of a construction job."

"What else did he say?"

“You’re very interested in what he's doing."

"I am. He’s always been a very good friend. He was Luke's best friend in the world; you know that."

"Is that the only reason?"

"Stop that."

"Stop what?"

"Stop doing what you're doing—implying that I like him more than as a friend."

"I don't see why you don't. You two would be perfect together."

"Let's talk about something else other than men."

"I wasn't talking about men I was talking about my bruder."

"You know what I mean. Stop talking about possible men for me."

"You brought it up."

Katie laughed. "I did?"

"Jah! You did."

“Maybe I did.” Katie blew out a deep breath. "Nothing is ever easy is it?"

"I suppose not. If you think you might grow to love Mark or if there’s some spark of love in your heart, I think you should do something about it now.”

"Don't say any more, Pamela."

"I need to say something. I think he's ready for marriage. How would you feel if Julie snapped him up?"

"I'd be happy for him—them."

Pamela stared into her eyes. "Really?"

"Jah, really." Katie cleared her throat. "I want him to be happy."

"He’d be happy with you. "

"Stop it!"

Pamela laughed. "I just want you to be happy and not have any regrets."

“I never have regrets.
